This Cape Eagle Owl (I think!) and its family were living up in a tree in the Namib Rand desert, right under a small wooden shack where we parked the quad bikes we were riding. They just sat there supervising, making sure we put everything back in the right place or maybe just wishing we would go away…

The magnificent Verreaux’s Eagle Owl, thought to be the largest of Africa’s owls, has a potential wingspan of potentially 6.5 feet. It is always a gift to see an owl in the daytime, and this gorgeous hooter with his pink eyelids was truly a treat. (Even if he would not accommodate me with a better angle!)
